The primary healthcare team may include staff members such as the primary care physician, nurse, midwife, medical technician, psychologist, dietitian and social services specialist. Moreover, the academic scope of primary healthcare includes collaboration with natural sciences and social sciences as well as medical science.
The applicability of scientific data obtained in the laboratory or hospital setting, and the means of practical usage of such data is unresolved (translational research, “from bench to bedside”). In this context, the assessment of knowledge generated by basic and clinical sciences in the field will enhance the external validity of scientific values.
It is not possible to simplify everyday practices of primary healthcare into a single biomedical model. A linear process does not exist in medical decision-making algorithms. Each patient or health individual is part of a large puzzle, and is thus handled within the context of a systems theory that undertakes complexity beyond a linear model. Otherwise, each individual is managed within the framework of a specific problem with a unidirectional decision process, in which the psychosocial and social dimensions are often overlooked.
Primary healthcare that embraces the approach of preventive medicine has to offer methods that aim to protect and improve the health of patients and healthy individuals. Life style changes are never easy. Thus, the primary healthcare team ought to offer appropriate consultancy services and health education to patients and healthy individuals.
The program has a multidisciplinary approach, and adopts the inter-professional method that is crucial in teamwork.
